Collection: Robert Conover

Robert Fremont Conover (1920-1998), is an American painter and print maker from Trenton, New Jersey. He obtained his professional education in the Philadelphia Museum School, the Art Students League of New York, The Brooklyn Museum School and the Barnet Foundation, under the tutelage of renowned artists Will Barnet, Morris Kantor, Max Beckmann and Louis Schanker.

His early works of the 1950’s consisted of geometric abstract paintings featuring a limited color palette. As his style developed throughout the 1960’s, his compositions became more free-formed, strongly influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, and employing a broader range of color. Concurrently, he continued creating abstract and realistic woodcuts. During the 1970’s, his work evolved into large, colorful cardboard relief prints. These compositions were geometric and abstract, with an emphasis on bold diagonal movements.

His work has been held in the Brooklyn Museum Print Annual; at the Library of Congress; at New York's Museum of Modern Art; in the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, and many other major institutions. Conover has won many purchase prizes, including by the Society of American Graphic Artists and the Associated American Artist Gallery. Conover was also an instructor of painting and graphics at the New School for Social Research and the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts.
